Find the carrier and the location holding the parcel
Open the parcel record and the carrier’s official tracking page. Record the attempted-delivery event, current location and any action requested. A generic “delivery unsuccessful” line does not explain whether the issue is absence, address access, an outstanding requirement or another exception.
Read the delivery card or authenticated account notice and compare its reference with your parcel. If a text asks for money or updated card details, open the carrier’s official site separately before acting. Do not let urgency in a message replace checking that it concerns your own shipment.
UK example: holding periods depend on the location
Royal Mail’s redelivery page describes collection and redelivery choices. Its October 2026 terms update states that items sent or redirected to a Post Office or Parcelshop at a sender’s or recipient’s request have a 10-day collection period; Customer Service Points retain an 18-day period. The update moves the change’s effective date to October 25, 2026.Royal Mail: redelivery and collection options Royal Mail: October 2026 retention changes
This is a Royal Mail example reviewed on November 2, 2026, not a deadline for every UK parcel or another country. Use the exact operator, location and notice attached to your delivery. If two pages appear to conflict, ask the operator to confirm the deadline for the specific reference.
Confirm the action you booked
For collection, check the location, opening hours, identification and whether someone else may collect. For redelivery, check the date, eligible address and any confirmation reference. Save the booking result and continue watching tracking; an unsubmitted form does not reserve a slot.
If you cannot act before the holding deadline, contact the operator promptly and ask which options remain. Do not assume another delivery attempt resets the clock. Tell the purchasing service what the carrier has confirmed if the parcel is at risk of being returned.
- Carrier and parcel reference verified
- Holding location and deadline confirmed
- Collection or redelivery requirements checked
- Booking confirmation saved
- Next tracking event monitored
Trace a return-to-sender explicitly
Ask which sender address the return label names and which party can trace it. Keep the return tracking reference and confirmation of receipt if available. Re-dispatch, additional costs and eligibility to receive the parcel again need a new answer from the service; a returned status alone does not establish a refund.
